Limitless Growth

I was interested in these dance marathons as a proxy to discuss contemporary queer and nightlife, and to consider our modern attention economy, commodification of rest, and productivity. Also, I wanted to explore how pain and suffering are turned into entertainment.
In this exhibition, we encounter a pair of vitreous sculptures that show these infinitely reflecting competitions in a dance marathon, drawn from the film "Surrender". Here we have the first one, with two competing couples caught in a state of both care and collapse. They're mounted on top of a mountain of energy drinks, referencing the "limitless growth" energy drink supplied to contestants in the film. I also depicted them holding a slightly ominous and grinning rat trophy. So, there are binaries at play here: collapse and resuscitation, failure and victory, self and the other. I wanted all of this to be infinitely reflected in the space, creating a mirror maze of multiple reflections.
Flanking the two chambers in the installation are control or operation panels that reference ballroom selectors in hotels. I researched Japanese love hotels for this project, but the panels also reference ambiguous devices used in bureaucratic or scientific experiments. They contain a bizarre series of contradictory and strange promises.
In the second chamber, we see another depiction of these competing couples in a further state of collapse, emphasizing the uncanny doubling between this space and the other. This creates a confusion of orientation as you navigate through the extension, all surrounded by mirrors. Finally, we have another apartment buzzer sculpture containing ridiculous instructions or possibilities, ranging from garbage to public and private parts, to moderate information, civilian requests, and bleep-outs.
