The simple planes of the forms, the small chin, the tiny mouth with upturned corners, and the long slender nose signal an archaic phase of Buddhist sculpture in northern China. The narrowness of the face and the high spring of the eyebrows suggest a date within the latest works at Yungang, probably in the 490s. The two sides of the face have been deliberately distorted to compensate for a position high on a wall above and to the left of the viewer.Yungang, Shanxi province, China;Yamanaka, & Co., New York;Purchased from Yamanaka, & Co. by The Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art, Kansas City, MO, 1931.https://art.nelson-atkins.org/objects/6347Northern Qi Dynasty (550-577 C.E.)8 1/2 x 4 x 5 inches (21.59 x 10.16 x 12.7 cm)Purchase: the Asian Art Aquisition Fund in memory of Laurence SickmanHead of a Bodhisattva Chinese From Qingzhou, Shandong Province Northern Qi Dynasty (550-577) Fine hard limestone Purchase: The Asian Art Acquisition Fund in memory of Laurence Sickman F99-1Giuseppe Eskenazi;Purchased from Giuseppe Eskenazi by The Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art, Kansas City, MO, 1999.https://art.nelson-atkins.org/objects/3075416 x 13 x 12 inches (40.64 x 33.02 x 30.48 cm)Gift of Dr. and Mrs. Nicholas S. The image is full-bodied yet imbued with a sense of stately movement effected by the flowing garments and twisting scarves that eddy around the figure. The deep carving and high relief drapery produce a dramatic effect of shadow and highlight, which, combined with the rich polychrome palette, result in a figure that is magnificent yet gentle, humanized and immediately appealing.A tightly folded manuscript found in a sealed cavity in the back records that this image was repaired and repainted in 1348. The Assembly of Tejaprabha China Yuan Dynasty (1279-1368), early 14th century Ink and mineral colors on clay
This mural comes from a monastery in Shanxi province called the Temple of Expansive Victory (Guangshengsi). Tejaprabha, Buddha of Radiant Light, was believed to control the constellations and to protect against celestial catastrophes. An earthquake severely damaged the monastery in 1303, and it is possible that this mural was commissioned in response to that calamity.
Tejaprabha sits here on a lotus throne surrounded by a constellation of figures representing the Eleven Celestial Luminaries-the Sun, Moon, and Five Planets of traditional Chinese astronomy and the four imaginary Dark Stars. The painting technique uses strong sweeping outlines of black ink, filled with bright mineral colors, particularly cinnabar red and malachite green, with a subtle use of blue highlights. The figures are solemn and substantial, counterbalanced by fluid drapery lines, flying scarves and transparent haloes that give the mural a sense of light gracefulness and intense, but restrained, energy.

Bodhisattvas are enlightened beings who have vowed to assist others on their spiritual paths. There are many forms of bodhisattvas. This bodhisattva is known as Avalokiteshvara (Guanyin in Chinese) and can be identified by the small figure of Amitabha Buddha in the center of the high crown. The bodhisattva holds a wheel or ball f loating on clouds, and is further identified as Cintamani (wish-granting jewel) Chakra (wheel of doctrine) bodhisattva, or Ruyilun Guanyin in Chinese.
Ruyilun Guanyin became a figure of worship following the introduction of esoteric forms of Buddhism into China and would have occupied a central space on a temple wall. This figure would have been accompanied by other attendant figures such as the pair to your left.

Two Bodhisattvas Burning Ritual Incense China Five Dynasties (907–960 C.E.), datable to the Guangshun reign period (951–953 C.E.) From Cisheng Monastery, Wenxian, Henan Province Ink and color on clay
These two bodhisattvas were once part of an ensemble of painted and sculptured figures in a temple that followed esoteric forms of Buddhism in China. Esoteric Buddhism emphasized various rituals, represented here by an incense burner. One figure lifts the lid of an elaborate burner, while the other drops incense into the vessel. On the right, an elegant hand, holding a rope of jewels, remains from a third figure who was also taking part in the ritual. The burner and two covered boxes on the table derive from the style of Tang silverware. For real examples, see the wall cases in the hallway (gallery 224). Notice a lotus-shaped burner (35-124/9), which, despite its hand-held form, possesses similar lotus petals and leaf base.

Guanyin Bodhisattva China Five Dynasties (907–960 C.E.), datable to the 2nd year of the Tianfu reign period (937 C.E.) From Cisheng Monastery, Wenxian, Henan Province Ink and color on clay
When a small break in the Two Bodhisattvas on the opposite wall revealed color within the clay foundation, Museum conservators determined that the painting had been done on a surface plastered over a previous work. The two paintings were carefully separated and revealed this bodhisattva of an earlier period. Because this painting was preserved under the mud plaster, the colors remain fresh. Some areas have been restored to integrate the composition. This earlier painting is rendered in a much simpler style than the other two. It incorporates broader areas of color but simplifies the surface decoration. The figure in the shape of a f luid S curve resembles many Tang dynasty sculptures. These stylistic elements suggest that it predates the images in the other two paintings.
