“王大妈”为何人？

Who is Dama Wang?

“王大妈”是杜秋锐作品中不可或缺的重要角色。他创作有《The adventures of Dama Wang（王大妈历险记）》系列。据杜秋锐说，蓝本缘起于曾经的邻居大妈，是一个结合童年记忆和个人经验，融汇了诸多小市民形象的综合体。

Dama Wang plays a crucial role in Du Qiurui's series "The adventures of Dama Wang". Du Qiurui said that the original idea for this character comes from a lady who used to be his neighbor. Miss Wang embodies a complex combination of childhood memories, personal experiences and typical elements of many urban citizens of small towns.

他们在平凡中演绎生活的各样场景。在他们身上，保守和开放同时存在，很多观念和年轻人相违背，具有独特的矛盾性。她像所有婆婆妈妈一样，熟稔世故，同时拥有小聪明与大智慧，自私但也善良。

These common people have usually ordinary lives. For some aspects, they can be considered conservative, but for some others they are open minded. Many of their ideas are in contrast with those of young people and therefore they have their own unique contrasts. Like all mature ladies, Dama Wang is sophisticated and sharp: she is intelligent, sometimes selfish but also kind.

这个角色是“王大妈”还是“王大爷”并不太重要。他们的普遍性能够直达人们认知的某一处场景，这种直观的信息传递将个体经验的多元和碎片化重组，足以激发共鸣。

Regardless of the gender difference of these kind of characters, their most important characteristic is their universality: their life can reflect moments of common people's life. There is a resonance between the characters represented in the artwork and the viewers as they share the fragmented and multifaceted life typical of each individual.

当尼采质疑现代主义的理性和普遍真理时，“王大妈”在菜市场从商贩处砍价获得胜利。许多年后，尼采的质疑被后人再次质疑，大妈依然站在社区广场之巅引领新一轮广场舞时尚。“王大妈”，无疑是后现代多元化生活的另一种诠释。

When Nietzsche was questioning the rationality and universality of modernism, Dama Wang was bargaining at the grocery market. Many years later, Nietzsche's assumptions were challenged by later generations, and Dama Wang still stood on top of the community square to lead a new round of square dancing. Dama Wang is undoubtedly another interpretation of the variety of postmodern life.

因为求学的原因，杜秋锐常年生活在纽约。在他的生活中，曼哈顿是个很小的圈子，经常能因为偶遇熟人而带来惊喜。“在这个世界中，每一个人都是主角，每一个处角落都有一场戏剧在上演。”杜秋锐如是说。

During his studies, Du Qiurui lived in New York. Manhattan was a small circle, and during that time he would accidentally meet new people. "In this world, everyone is the protagonist of a drama that is played in every corner".

回到北京，在这个硕大的城市里，难得再有机会去享受偶遇的快乐。邻里之间可能也少有交流，这种孤独的生活方式似乎缺少了一些人情味。《小惊喜》系列应运而生，创作成为打开交流需求的剧场，不同的人在此汇聚，上演奇异或美妙的故事。偶遇经验的缺失在画面中得以再创造。

Back in Beijing, in this vast city, it is rare to have the opportunity to enjoy random encounters. Sometimes even the communication with the neighbors is limited and therefore this lonely lifestyle seems to lack a touch of humanity. Within this emotional state, the series titled "Little Surprise" was created. This work represents the need for communication. Different people gather here to stage weird or wonderful stories. Unreal encounters can be recreated in the picture.

作品《Aerobics no more（不再做有氧运动）》，灵感来源于他在健身房看到的许多大爷大妈，他被他们运动的热情所感染，尽管他们动作并不标准，但那股热情十分具有感染力。

The work "Aerobics no more" is inspired by people encountered in the gym. Their enthusiasm for exercise is infectious: although their movements are not standard, the enthusiasm spread throughout the space.

与此同时，他通过近些年健身热潮的勃发，思考到一些现实问题。在大城市中每个人都想拥有一种时尚的生活方式。无论你今天吃沙拉还是增肌，头上戴“草”还是身着貂毛外套，或者用一杯咖啡来洗涤疲惫。

Through the representation of the growing interest for fitness, the artist analyses some social problems. In a big city, everybody like to have a stylish lifestyle, regardless of the fact that some people eat salad, some other practice body building, some people wear flower shaped hair clips or wear a fur coat, whereas other people like to drink coffee to overcome the tiredness.

物质带来的需求总是像一颗甜美的糖果，吃下去并不会真的如何，而感受生活真谛，需要每个人自己去发掘。怪诞的画面也许可以说明，自信并不是靠健身就能获得的。健身房里的消耗，换个角度也是堕入另一个消费主义的圈套。

The materialist demand is always like a sweet candy. It doesn't matter if you eat or not, but to discover the meaning of life, everyone needs to find it by themselves. The grotesque picture may suggest that self-confidence cannot be obtained by practicing body exercise. Doing exercise in the gym belongs to another form of consumerist trap.

学插画出身的杜秋锐很注重作品场景中的叙事性。他自己的每件作品都有故事结构。画作中浮夸的表情和动作，泡泡糖般甜腻粘稠的色彩。是他对生活中荒诞与离奇的另类诠释。

Du Qiurui, who is an illustrator, pays great attention to the narrative character of his creations. Each work has a story line. The exaggerated expressions and movements in the painting are sweet and sticky like bubble gum. It represents his alternative interpretation of the absurd and bizarre aspects of life.

他习惯在生活中积累素材，通过漫画、水彩、Zine等各种方式和渠道来积累创造。对他而言，创作从来不是单一的工作，而是整个生活的结果。

For his works, he takes inspiration from his life and from images of manga, watercolors and Zine. For him, creation has never been a single job, but the result of an entire life.

在系列《A Bizarre World（怪诞世界）》中，作品是他的童年是现实与幻想的结合体，是杜秋锐为自己建立的一个想象的世界。

In the series A Bizarre World, the artist represents a dreamlike dimension that reflects the his childhood and represents a combination of reality and fantasy. It embodies an imaginary world built by Du Qiurui for himself.

作品描绘了繁忙的城市场景，角色传达出丰富强烈的情感——愤怒、恐惧、无聊、喜悦。他们中的一些人专注于手机；另一些人则用着令人观感不适的配饰，如脸基尼。

The work describes the busy urban life, and the characters convey rich and intense emotions -- anger, fear, boredom, joy. Some of them focus on their phones; others wear uncomfortable accessories, such as the facekini.

“在西方，人们认为脸基尼很恐怖，但中国女性因为不想被晒黑而穿着它们，我觉得这很有意思~我喜欢探索东西方、传统与现代之间的差异，并在作品中创造出鲜明的对比。”杜秋锐说。

"In the west, people think that facekini is scary, but Chinese women wear it because they don't want to get tanned, and I think it's interesting. I like to explore the differences between east and west, tradition and modernity, and create sharp contrasts in my work." Du Qiurui said.
