余华的《活着》，被喻为最能唤起“文革”回忆的作品之一，是一部语言简洁、平实的大师之作。而在他后期的作品，如《兄弟》中，则带有夸张极繁的色彩。而理查德·弗兰纳根在《一个巴掌能拍响》、《顾尔德的钓鱼书》、《深入北方的小路》等小说中，植根于自己的家庭经历和他人经历，实验了多种表达方法。两位当代小说大师将探讨如何赋予历史素材以小说的声音。

The representation of historical suffering infiction is a challenge for the author: to make the weight of history bearablefor the reader, and to negotiate the aesthetics of pain. Tonight’s authorsdiscuss their narrative approaches to historical subjects. Yu Hua’s To Live,known as one of the most effective fictional evocations of the CulturalRevolution, is a masterpiece of simplicity and plain language, while in laterworks such as Brothers he’s taken a more maximalist approach. RichardFlanagan, in novels such as The Sound of One Hand Clapping, Gould’sBook of Fish, and The Narrow Road to the Deep North, hasexperimented with a wide variety of voices, rooted in his family’s experiences,and the experiences of others. The two authors discuss their matching offictional voice to historical material.

Richard Flanagan isconsidered one of Australia’s finest novelists. He is also a journalist and filmmaker.Each of his novels has attracted major praise and awards. In 2014, he wasawarded the Man Booker Prize for The Narrow Road to the Deep North, a book about a flawedwar hero on the Thai-Burma death railway which was hailed by The Guardianas “a masterpiece”. His debut novel Death of a River Guide in 1994 wasdescribed by The Times LiterarySupplement as “one of the most auspicious debuts in Australian writing”.His next book, The Sound of One Hand Clapping, a story of Slovenian immigrants, sold more than 150,000 copiesin Australia, and its film adaptation was nominated for the Golden Bear at the 48thBerlin Film Festival. Richard’s 2001 novel Gould’sBook of Fish, based on the life of a convict artist, won the 2002Commonwealth Writers’ Prize. Wanting, published in 2008, which cutsbetween two stories of historical figures including Charles Dickens, was a NewYorker Book of the Year and Observer Book of the Year, and won theQueensland Premier’s Prize, the Western Australian Premier’s Prize and TasmaniaBook Prize. His most recent novel FirstPerson is loosely based on his experience ghost-writing the autobiographyof alleged fraudster John Friedrich.

余华，中国著名当代作家，1980 年代先锋小说作家之一。1960 年 4 月出生，曾经从事过 5 年的牙医工作，1983 年开始写作，至今已经出版长篇小说 5 部，中短篇小说集 6 部，随笔集 5 部，主要作品有《活着》、《许三观卖血记》、《在细雨中呼喊》、《兄弟》、《第七天》、《十个词汇里的中国》、《黄昏里的男孩》、《往事与刑罚》等。其作品被翻译成 30 种语言在美国、英国、澳大利亚、法国、德国、意大利、西班牙等 30 多个国家出版。曾获意大利格林扎纳·卡佛文学奖（1998 年），法国文学和艺术骑士勋章（ 2004 年）法国国际信使外国小说奖（2008 年），意大利朱塞佩·阿切尔比国际文学奖（ 2014 年）等。

Now one of China's best-known novelists, Yu Hua is one of the generation of writers who began reconstructing modern Chinese literature in the 1980s, and in the 90s began publishing a series of spare, simple, carefully-drawn novels. His latest novels, Brothers, an ambitious tapestry of two eras of Chinese literature, and The Seventh Day, a dark look at the plight of China’s underclasses represent a departure in style, length and subject matter from his previous work.

Yu Hua is the recipient of numerous international awards and honors, including the Italian Premio Grinzane Cavour and Giuseppe Acerbi prizes, and the French Prix Courrier International. In 2004 he was made a Chevalier de l’Ordre des Arts et des Lettres by the French government.
