The exhibition catalogue Antony Gormley: Still Moving named after his solo exhibition held at the Long Museum (West Bund) is now officially launched!
The solo exhibition Still Moving of British contemporary sculptor Antony Gormley held at the Long Museum (West Bund) came to an end on 26th Nov 2017. Where the crowds gathered around and posed, mimicking the human sculptures; or meditating before the paintings concerning about light and shadow, white and black. Vivid as it is where the season belonged to Anthony Gormley...
When the glamour of the exhibition opening has faded away, what has left could be the beautiful moments settled in the book.
The initial idea
Antony’s initial ideas were that the catalogue could record audiences’ personal visiting experience as well as inviting readers to walk along the space with eyes and to encounter every artwork as if actually were at the spot. It was not easy to achieve both purposes.
Thus the photographer was trying to capture the interactions between audience and artwork while shooting for the catalogue, and focus on the details of the artworks when audiences scattered, so as to simulate audiences’ eyes with lenses, shifting from one artwork to another.
Design
Jiang Qinggong and Zhou Qi from Shanghai View Studio were in charge of the graphic design of the catalogue, who have earned reputation for a long time in the design field.
In order to highlight the quiet and clean characteristics in Antony’s art, the cover page was applied with plain grey, and stamped with the body form inspiring from the work Passage II, which echoes the poster design of the exhibition. The images of the sculptures in the exhibition were sorted according to visitors’ tour route. They are not interspersed by the images of the paintings and prints which are placed at the back.
In this way, the readers could get a clear view of Antony’s artworks. For the same reason, as Antony decided to cast aside any explanatory wall texts in the exhibition, the sculpture part in the catalogue was not paginated or instructed at all, allowing the readers to concentrate on the artworks themselves and a more direct contact with them.
Articles
Two wonderful articles are included in this catalogue.
One was contributed by Richard Noble, the professor at Goldsmith, University of London. By means of analyzing the exhibited works, in the article he deeply discussed the art concept of Antony Gormley: how to start from the idea “human body as a perceivable space”, and to activate the position of the architecture and the society which we live in settled in the space.
The other significant article was from Pi Li, a well-known curator at the M+ museum in Hong Kong. He introduced the concept of “Lightness and Weight” from Italian novelist Calvino and discussed deeply about the issues of “existence”.
Printing
The amazing outcome could not be obtained without the pick of paper, the high-qualified reproduction of colours and the superb binding techniques.
Therefore we really appreciate Artron Art Group, who has been working with us for many years and supported us with the most professional support.
Mr. Li Fengfeng from Artron Graphic Dept came in person specially to visit Antony’s exhibition so as to be inspired by his artworks, as the visual sense on spot are the best references for adjusting tones at a later stage, and helped to elevate the final images to the highest level.
The exhibition catalogue Antony Gormley: Still Moving is currently available for sale at the Art Shop at the Long Museum (West Bund). Don’t miss it!
