HOW International Curatorial Residency Program welcomes the sixth curator-in-residence, Darya Bogdanova from Russia, the recipient of the international research exchange program “Contact Zones: Far East” initiated by ZARYA Center for Contemporary Art. She will stay with us from November 18, 2018 to the end of the year.

HOW International Curatorial

Residency Program

Co-sponsored by HOW Art Museum and Onehome Art Hotel (Shanghai), HOW International Curatorial Residency Program launches an open call for curators, scholars and arts writers worldwide who are interested to get deeper insight of Chinese contemporary art scene. The residency program aims to motivate residency exchange opportunities around the world and to forge durable institutional relationships in the long run. Individualized arrangements will be provided for each curator-in-residence. The arrangements include meetings with art professionals, studio visits, gallery and institution visits, and attendance at selected performances and other events. Furthermore, the curators-in-residence are invited to work in close collaboration and coordination with HOW Art Museum team, as well as to produce a website/Wechat article or essay, or to organize a public event such as a lecture.

Darya Bogdanova

Darya Bogdanova is a Vladivostok – based curator, street artist and music scene organizer, and serves as Director of Contrabanda Jazz Bar in Vladivostok, a venue for various cultural events also known as one of the most interesting and exciting venues for the music life in the city. Furthermore, Bogdanova works at V.K. Arseniev Primorsky State Museum as a project curator and cooperates with ARTETAGE Museum of Modern Art. The main purpose of Bogdanova’s activity is to improve the living quality in the city by means of cultural and historical resources.

Bogdanova graduated from the Vladivostok State University of Economics and Service with a degree in environmental design. Since she was a design student in college, she has started collaborating with the V.K. Arseniev Primorsky State Museum as an exhibition curator. At that time, she was also working on large-scale projects supported by Vladimir Potanin Foundation including Land-Art Festival “Labyrinths of Russian Island”, held on one of the military base of Vladivostok Fortress, and project “Nasledily” (Heritage they left us), based on the events of the 5-day visit of the famous Russian writer Anton Chekhov to Vladivostok. Engagement with the historical heritage of the city and the formation of a high-quality, diverse urban environment are the principal themes of Bogdanova’s projects over the past 10 years.

Research Topic at HOW

Darya Bogdanova’s project at HOW will focus on investigating the arts phenomenon of harbor-cities such as Shanghai and Vladivostok-their geographical openness and their closeness under particular political circumstances. Bogdanova is interested in the impact of the paradox-the simultaneous closeness and openness within a space of city-on the development of the artistic and creative life inurban landscape. Both as harbor-cities, Shanghai and Vladivostok share similar historical ways during the 20th century that have made them form their respectively specific art scenes. Looking at the development of art scenes in these two culturally different cities, Bogdanova will attempt to search for the real sources of the artistic inspiration of harbor-cities.

About Contact Zones: Far East

The international research exchange program Contact Zones: Far East was initiated by ZARYA Center for Contemporary Art and ZARYA Foundation for the Development of Contemporary Art supported by BELUGA GROUP. The program offers one-month fellowships to up to three individuals from Russia to conduct cross-cultural research on the Far East of Russia and Asia at one of the partner institutions in Asia in 2018-2019. As the Chinese partner of ZARYA Center for Contemporary Art, this November HOW Art Museum will welcome Darya Bogdanova, one of the recipients of “Contact Zones: Far East” grant to participate HOW International Curatorial Residency Program. Meanwhile, HOW Art Museum has sent a curator to the ZARYA Center for Contemporary Art to conduct cross-cultural study as well.

ZARYA Center of Contemporary Art is a non-profit institution that seeks to promote the achievements of contemporary culture in Russia and beyond, while supporting local emerging artists in Vladivostok. The center opened in Vladivostok in 2013 in the creative cluster on the grounds of the former Zarya textile factory, as part of an initiative by entrepreneur and patron, Alexander Mechetin, the founder of Russia’s largest alcoholic beverage company, BELUGA GROUP.
