A city’s existence depends on memory,at the start of 2019, the Museum of Contemporary Art, Shanghai (MoCA Shanghai) is proud to launch the large-scale international exhibition Post Contemporary-Urban Graphics 7019, made possible by the generous support of Mr. Chang Hyun Ham. Co-curated by MoCA Executive Director Miriam Sun and the Korean curator Jisoo Lim, the exhibition features works by eight internationally renowned graffiti artists: Shepard Fairey (OBEY), JonOne, John Matos Crash, ZEVS, L’atlas, Vhils, M. Chat, and Tanc (Tancrede Perrot). Examining the contemporary zeitgeist from a new perspective, the exhibition addresses such issues as urban humanism and street culture and promises to offer Chinese viewers an unprecedented experience of contemporary art.
Artists
M.Chat也就是作者的化身。
Exhibition Information
A subculture that arose in the streets of New York, in the margins of society, street art has become a symbol of the contemporary age and an important artistic intervention into contemporary life. Street art is about expressing messages from the heart in colorful images and striking texts that demand and command our gaze. It has quickly become an important part of global popular culture, sweeping through cities around the world like a tidal wave and leaving behind indelible memories of youth.
Coming of age during the 1970’s and 80’s, the eight artists have a shared background in popular culture. These pioneers have slowly but surely moved from the margins of cities and into the centers of art world. Their passions, captured on canvases, have touched global viewers and inspired new cultural movements in every realm from art and design to popular music and street dance. Perhaps not everybody approves of street art, but we cannot deny its tremendous influence on contemporary culture and aesthetics.
Artists in Post Contemporary -Urban Graphics 7019 construct cityscapes with materials from real-life or reassemble fragments of street culture into an urban vision. Together they have punched holes through wall after wall between the 1970’s and 2019 and between the east and the west. Through these holes, we catch glimpses of certain trajectories of contemporary art and of the restive age that made them possible. In this exhibition, the multiple art forms of graffiti, music, dance, theater, and literature are woven together into voices of the city. This is reason behind the number 7019 in the title.
A city’s transformations are both accidental and inevitable. Over several decades, street art has risen from its humble beginnings in urban margins and developed into a recognized art form, one that enthralls and inspires viewers around the world. It is our hope that as visitors to MoCA Shanghai experience the urban moments and traces captured and rendered by the artists, they will also be moved by their passion for art and their path breaking courage.
