简介

一百多年前,面对西方文化的强势冲击,中国绘画去向何处?心系中华文化命运的仁人志士一度徘徊在十字路口,在民族大义、国家前途的时代命题面前毅然做出了各自的选择。林风眠和吴冠中都曾经历过上下求索的艰辛历程。因时代的差异,吴冠中在前辈林风眠的“中国画去向何处”难题之外,还多了“油画如何民族化”的审慎思考。如果说,林风眠和吴冠中的艺术成就创建了中国传统文化艺术创造性转化和创新性发展的成功样本,那么,在今天全球化浪潮势不可挡之时,这两份样本更显示出异常可贵的当下价值。 

Over a hundred years ago, facing the formidable impact of Western culture, what was the future of Chinese painting? People deeply concerned about the fate of Chinese culture once stood hesitantly at a crossroads, facing the epochal questions of national righteousness and the country's future, and ultimately made their own choices. Both Lin Fengmian and Wu Guanzhong experienced a strenuous journey of exploration. Due to the differences in their times, Wu Guanzhong, apart from contemplating Lin Fengmian's dilemma of "where Chinese painting is heading," also pondered over the cautious thought of "how to nationalize oil painting." If the artistic achievements of Lin Fengmian and Wu Guanzhong represent successful examples of the creative transformation and innovative development of traditional Chinese cultural arts, then, in today's era of unstoppable globalization, these two examples demonstrate an exceptionally valuable contemporary significance. 

 

“中国式风景”是这个展览的主题。众所周知,同样是描绘自然景象,西方风景画和中国山水画各成体系、大相径庭。展览主题用“风景”而非“山水”是为了表明在中西交融的过程中中国艺术借鉴西方成果的史实;但是我们同样要强调的是,“中国式”作为一个立场鲜明的定语,充分表明了中国元素、中国精神对具体艺术实践的价值定位和文化判断。

"Pictures (fengjing) of China." is the theme of this exhibition. As is widely known, Western landscape painting and Chinese shanshui painting, though both depict natural scenes, have developed into distinct systems that are vastly different from each other. The choice of the term "Pictures (fengjing)" rather than "shanshui" for the exhibition theme is to acknowledge the historical fact of Chinese art drawing upon Western achievements; however, it is equally emphasized that "of China" as a distinctly positioned descriptor, vividly demonstrates the value orientation and cultural judgment of Chinese elements and spirit in specific artistic practices.

 

中文“风景”二字同时包含自然风景(风光)、社会风景(风情)和精神风景(风骨)等意味,可充分涵盖林风眠和吴冠中多元的创作题材。林风眠和吴冠中熔铸古今、融通中西的开放视野以及开创新艺术的辉煌成就,为后来的中国绘画艺术开辟了一片新天地,这一片新天地便是“中国式风景”。而且,他们的探索不仅促成了传统中国绘画的现代化和当代化,开启了中国水墨艺术多元发展的新局面,同时,也促进了西方油画的中国化转型,开创了绘画艺术的新图式。

The term "fengjing"( Here translated as Pictures) in Chinese simultaneously embodies the meanings of natural scenery, social scenery, and spiritual scenery, fully encompassing the diverse subjects of Lin Fengmian and Wu Guanzhong. Their achievements in melding the ancient with the modern, and harmonizing Eastern and Western perspectives, have opened new horizons for later Chinese painting art, known as the "Pictures of China." Their explorations not only led to the modernization and contemporization of traditional Chinese painting but also opened new dimensions for the diverse development of Chinese ink art. Furthermore, they facilitated the Sinicization transformation of Western oil painting, creating new paradigms in the art of painting.

 

林风眠、吴冠中持续接力创造出的“中国式风景”兼具了国际视野、时代经验、本土逻辑、传统精髓、东方韵味和中国气派,充分展现了在中西交融中中华文化异常坚韧的延续性、创新性、统一性、包容性与和平性,展现了中华民族的文化精神、文化胸怀和文化自信。

The "Pictures of China" continuously created by Lin Fengmian and Wu Guanzhong possesses an international outlook, contemporary experience, local logic, traditional essence, Oriental charm, and Chinese grandeur. It fully displays the extraordinary resilience, innovation, unity, inclusiveness, and peacefulness of Chinese culture amidst the blend of East and West, showcasing the cultural spirit, breadth, and confidence of the Chinese nation.

 

在中法建交60周年、中法文化旅游年的开年之际,面对新时代、新机遇、新挑战,我们回顾林风眠、吴冠中两代艺术家的卓越实践和伟大成就,重新审视他们艺术创造的理论逻辑、实践途径以及具有强烈历史使命和社会责任的艺术抉择,有利于我们认真思考如何担负起新时代赋予的新的文化使命,为中华优秀文化和现代文明的建设创造属于我们这个时代的中国式风景。

At the onset of the 60th anniversary of Sino-French diplomatic relations and the Sino-French Year of Culture and Tourism, facing a new era, new opportunities, and new challenges, we look back at the exceptional practices and great achievements of two generations of artists, Lin Fengmian and Wu Guanzhong. By reexamining the theoretical logic, practical approaches, and art choices of their creations, marked by a strong sense of historical mission and social responsibility, we are better positioned to thoughtfully consider how to shoulder the new cultural responsibilities bestowed by the new era. This reflection aids us in contributing to the construction of an exceptional Chinese culture and modern civilization, creating a  "Picture of China" unique to our times.
